Day 33 Llubliana to Postojna

60 km (37 miles) day, 1,675 miles total

An easy and uneventful cycle from Llubliana. First half mainly town and village, second half climbing through wooded hills. Nothing to photograph. Afternoon went to the famous, and totally astonishing, Postojna Cave system. It’s  a series of caverns, halls and passages more than 24km in length. and two million years old. It’s apparently the most famous cave in the world and Slovenia’s most popular tourist attraction. This showed in the number of tour buses and the size of the queue for tickets. I was a little grumpy about the queue and the ticket price - but I shouldn’t have been.  You get to see about 5km of the cave on a tour that takes around 1½ hours of which 3.2km is by electric train. It it awe inspiring. Impossible to adequately describe. The largest carver - the Grand Hall, hosts concerts, can hold 10,000 people and is 40 meters high! As I mentioned on the Facebook/Instagram post, I was reminded of the passage from the Lord of the Rings when Gimli shows Legolas the Glittering Caves under Helms Deep - “Then Legolas repaid his promise to Gimli and went with him to the Glittering Caves; and when they returned he was silent, and would say only that Gimli alone could find fit words to speak of them.” I took 58 pictures and all of them were woefully inadequate. I went to the internet and copied the best - which are below. They are a poor representation but the best I could do. If an Elf can’t find words, then I certainly can’t. See them if you can! To cap a great day - an evening concert in the town square - packed with people, bars, and restaurants!
