Good day, very hot! I camped last night outside Angers and in the morning made a detour into the city. It was a poor choice, as it is not very interesting (except for the 13th Century Chateau d’Angers with its many bastions) and it was quite a big detour just for that. However I did find a shop open and a boulangerie and stocked up for breakfast and for lunch two days. Long, hot ride with little shade into the mid-afternoon. Stopped earlier to prepare brunch (scrambled egg and smoked salmon baguette). Gentleman offered to take my photo with my bike and the awesome sandwich He took it just as I was saying “don’t shoot while I’m chewing” (see pic). Decided to take a minor detour into Saumur. Very nice with a magnificent 12th Century chateau (built by an English king - Henry II). Quite busy for a Sunday. Great use of umbrellas to form shade over a street. Stopped for a quick beer and got talking (oh dear😕). Very late, so jumped a train to Tours (I’m not too proud for that) and arrived at 5:30 rather than 7:30 as I wanted to do some proper tourism. Tours is a sprawling city with a very nice medieval part around la Place Plumereau. It is half-timbered - a bit like a scruffy York but based around dining/drinking rather than shopping. Went to see the Pont Wilson and the Cathedral. Cathedral is 15th Century Bling- Gothic, amazing, although went inside and was convinced most of the money was spent on the outside decoration. Finished with a few in the inevitable Irish Pub. Excellent day!
