Day 15 Regensburg to Passau

55 km (34 miles)  day, 964 total
Today didn’t turn out exactly as I expected. Tom, the teacher from Skye, had turned up at the campsite the previous night. We went in to Regensburg for breakfast and to look around. Although Regensburg is supposed to be a lovely mediaeval city, I couldn’t find it. The town was full of delivery trucks and I couldn’t get any decent photographs - although there was little I wanted to capture.  However, we did have a fantastic breakfast. We sat with four lovely German people and had a wonderful conversation in the morning sunshine. At the end they insisted on buying our breakfast!. Tom set off independently from me. We had been told by the German people that the route to Passau, although lovely countryside, was not very interesting. This turned out to be the case. Lots of fields, with the Danube now very wide, running between them. The valley is very wide and is edged by green hills. The wind was adverse, progress slow, and Passau a long way still. Could be a tricky day. I detoured into Straubing where I found I could catch a local train to Passau - which I did. It was a great decision. I checked into the cheapest, and the smallest, hotel room I’ve ever stayed in. I was starving, so showered and went to explore and find food . Having asked several people where a starving cyclist should eat I went to the Bavarian Lion where I ordered the “five Bavarian sausages with sourkraut. It was big and came with sweet and hot mustards. Refreshed I went exploring. Passau is gorgeous on a summer evening. Great streets, cafes, bars and shops. Reasonably priced. iPhone ran out of battery so not as many pics as there would have been. Last picture is of a van selling Aperol Spritz from the back. Passau was filling up with Friday revellers and at the van there was a great free gig by a young local group. I sat for 90 minutes (3 Aperols). They were really good - doing covers of Ed Sheehan, the Fray, and similar. Wandered into the square by the Catherdral which had a live jazz concert. Great evening, shame about the battery issue but I’ll take some more in the morning. Won’t capture last nights magic atmosphere though. Best day, and town, yet. Lesson from the day - if it’s not working as expected- Di something about it. 😀
