Day 14 Ingolstadt to Regensburg
90km (56 miles) day, 930 miles total
More words than pictures today. Probably the reverse tomorrow.
ANOTHER brilliantly sunny day. Need to buy something for my lips which are cracking in the sun and wind. Not getting enough calories into me. I think I’ve lost at least 40% of my external body fat in the two weeks I’ve been cycling. Still some to go, but need to up my game after Vienna.
Route was in the wide valley below Ingolstadt by quiet roads, farm tracks and riverside paths- at least until Weltenburg where the river cuts through the Franconian Jura in a sheer sided gorge. Route wandered through Neuburg, Bad Gögging (which nobody should be guilty of) - a spa town famous for its sulphur springs. Really? Paying to sit in a bath smelling of rotten eggs? Morning was uneventful but met a couple from Zurich in another if those amazing tandem bikes I described in an earlier post. The bike is electric assisted but each set of pedals works independently, so each person can have different cadences and input different power. Amazing! The ladies husband, who was in the comfy front seat, has altziemers and can’t steer, hence the arrangement. Really moving. At 11:00 I’d done 32km and stopped for coffee in Neustadt before continuing to Weltenburg where there is the oldest abbey brewery in the world (opened 1050 - AD not AM!). On the way past many hop fields - presumably for the brewery. Hundreds of day cyclists who had made it a day out to try their most famous dark beer- Kloster Baruch-Dunkel. Here the plan was to catch one if the boats that ply the apparently spectacular gorge, but four weeks without rain had made the river too low. I have included a picture of what I missed from the internet.. B****r! So, I had to climb the hills. Upside was I reached my fastened speed of the trip in the way down - 56 KPH - not bad for a big-butted bike with the wind resistance if a bus!
Boats now appearing on the much larger Danube and was held up while a Cabin (not house) Boat was manoeuvred across the road at a marina. Past two lion statues (looked like the scene from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe where Askan gets killed). As I approached Regensburg the river banks became full of hundreds af cyclists who had ridden out to sunbathe and swim. Brilliant! Found a great campsite by the river and will tour Regensburg tomorrow morning.
Amazing HASE bike
Neustadt for coffee

Hi Phil, The way to get more calories in you is to drink more beer...it’s more fun than rice, pasta or potatoes!
