Day 11 Engen to Reidlingen

115 km (71 miles) day, 710 total

Set off early morning an immediately started to climb (see the ride profile up to around 11:00 in the pictures). Way was by farm and forest tracks - this is the Black Forest after all. At some point I crossed the watershed between the Rhine and the Danube catchments and just before 10:00 I topped a last rise to see the Danube valley spread out into the distance. Lovely 10km descent to the Danube at Tuttlingen. Celebrated with a big coffee and climbed the giant hill to the 14th Century castle (that’s the last peak in the profile). Shortly after the Danube enters an amazing gorge with massive white cliffs on both sides and room only for the path, the railway and the river ( and sometimes not even the railway). Very lovely with castles on many peaks. Stopped a a fabulous bar just before lunch that served the most enormous glass of wine for 3 Euros! The pictures simply can’t show how fantastic the scenery is and how quiet the track. When the gorge finished the villages were again picturesque, half-timbered, sets from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. More castles etc and spending the night is a very small, and basic, campsite.
