Day 1 St. Malo to Chateaubriand

132 Km (82 mile) day. 82 mile total

Sail was calm. Unexpectedly there was entertainment on board, two singing acts and a magician - all good. I was under-dressed for the air conditioning with no access to my bags so had a poor nights sleep. Full English breakfast and black coffee sorted me out first thing. Misty and light rain on arrival. Loads of cycle tourists’ bikes caused a bike jam in the storage space. Set off out of St. Malo in heaviy morning traffic but once clear route was through lots of lovely countryside cornfields, woods with mistletoe and generally lovely quiet villages. Got passed by many classic cars on the way to an event at LE Mans (they were on the ferry). Stopped to make Coffee about 11 by a lake in a small village and the sun came out and stayed out the rest of the day. Great 13 mile canal side ride immediately after. Very hot (red nose as a result). It was a hard day, the countryside far more hilly that I expected. Decided to finish in Châteaubriand and the road teased me with kilometre markings all the way from kilometre 40 out!. Tried to find a bar for a beer but as usual most of them were closed. Eventually found one 30 minutes from Châteaubriand and it was lovely! After last nights poor sleep and the distance very tired and decided to crash in a hotel tonight.  Got my first wound - a briar grabbed my arm on a narrow path!
